J P Sauer Custom Winchester 1885 Low-Wall Full-Stock Rifle .25-21 Stevens











A mate to the rifle available now, pictured on the cover of Rifle Magazine. According to the story I heard, a gentleman from Pasadena ordered three actions from Winchester and sent them to Sauer to be built into high grade custom rifles. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to re-assemble the set of three.
23 1/4" matted-top octagon barrel, engraved J. P. Sauer & Sohn Berlin, with 1 standing, 1 folding rear sight and silver bead front sight. 14 1/4"pull to striated horn buttplate with widow's peak. 1 7/8" - 2 3/8"drop. French grey finished Winchester low wall action with sculpted relief engraving of mythological creatures offset by bold open scrolled acanthus, and scrolled strap work, with floral highlights and stippled background. Sides of action depict large eagle with body and tail tapering into scrolled vine with berries. Toward rear sides of action are a smaller beasts heads merging into acanthus. Exceptionally fine grotesque lion mask on top of action behind hammer. Flowers and scrolls continue along operating lever, checkered at tail. Rear portion of barrel is engraved with panels of relief acanthus framed by simple scroll. Blued steel grip cap fully relief engraved almost certainly by Rudolph Kornbrath with ribbon and acanthus borders around central monogram for E P McM inlaid in two colors of gold. Dark, highly figured European walnut buttstock with beaded pancake cheekpiece, pistol grip. Full stock to the muzzle with horn forend tip, engraved sling bail, two cross-pin fasteners through engraved steel escutcheons, bored and fitted with wooden covered steel cleaning rod with brass drum-shaped head, and tail threaded for cleaning brushes. Weight: 6lbs, 8oz. Action originally manufactured circa 1914, bearing pre-war German commercial proofs. Excellent condition: 99% barrel blue. Action retains virtually all its French gray. Stocks retain most of their French polish finish. Bore is excellent. Action is crisp. With RCBS Group I loading dies and number 23 shell holder. $14,950.
