Northern Rockies Blacksmith Association

Board Meeting, May 18, 2013

Present: Frank Annighofer, Frank Donahue, Joel Machler

Not present:  Nathan Kimpell

The Club Power Hammer

Hammer at Tom's – keep it? Will always need a place to store it. There are liability issues when lending it out. Postpone decision, back on agenda in a year's time.

Insurance

Public demonstration and liability.  Frank A. called up California club and got a local quote for $500 for the group. Joel is in favor of getting insurance, even if it's on an event-by-event basis. Frank A. will get more information and share. The suggestion was made that the group get 2 or 3 quotes to consider. General consensus is to proceed with getting insurance.

Safety Policy

There is a need for a formal safety policy. Frank A. brought a copy of the safety policy from the California club. All members need to receive a copy of a safety policy and sign off on having read and understood it. Frank A. will email the safety policy and the board can read and comment on it. Joel suggested that the board let Susan Machler review the legalities.

The safety policy should be in place by the next meeting.

Yellowstone Park

September 2014 Conference at Mammoth? Just an idea at this time to be explored.

September 2013 Conference

Choteau? Tom's? Let the members decide between Holcomb's and Choteau. Further down the line, Hial is willing to host a conference. Fall of 2014 or Spring of 2015.

May 2014 Conference

Roscoe.  Frank A. and Annette are willing to organize. Bladesmith? Demo/Hands-on event.

Cody Buffalo Bill Demonstration in August.

Scott Roberts, Steve Fontanini, Annette and Frank, Glenn Gilmore.

Elections

Ask for candiates for elections in the Fall.

Curriculum

Steve, Dave, Marcus, Frank A., Joel, Jason are interested. Sufficient number to get started.

How to get it started? Will need to invest some money and time. Mark will come to MT for 4-day (?) training. $500/day and travel expenses – no travel time. Could combine this with a conference or do it separately? Joel suggested keeping it separate from conference. January 2014? Will the instructors have to make a financial commitment or just a commitment to serve the group as instructors? Joel suggested $100 + 50 hours.  Ask for a volunteer to lead in the organization.

Process:  1st step – certification of the instructors / 2nd step – making them instructors
