Smithson Mount

Scope, mounted.

The fire-blued locking button depressed and the scope sliding rearward in its dovetails.

The scope, off.

On more heavily-recoiling rifles, such as this .416 Rigby, double locking buttons may be used for greater reliability, but with somewhat more difficult dismounting.

Optionally, with the scope removed, a peep sight may be inserted into the rear receiver dovetail.

Smithson Mount - An elegant, well-engineered and well-built quick-detachable scope mount system, developed by gunmaker Joseph Smithson. Male dovetails on the underside of the scope rings, unlocked by a button on the left side, slide forward into complementary female dovetails, either in the bases or directly into cuts made in double-squarebridge receivers.
