Northern Rockies Blacksmith Association

Two pages, inadvertently left out of the Spring 2022 Newsletter:

The following list describes some potential types of steel used for common junkyard items. This information was compiled from several sources, Machinery's Handbook, Country Blacksmith, Blacksmith's Journal, and Carpenter Technology Corp. Machinery's Handbook is an excellent source for heat treatment of these steels.

Blacksmith Challenge

The Tong Clip above is an exercise in “does this thing really work?” Give it a good try ( I’m not going to hold anyone to the 1/4 square stock, you can use 3/8 if you wish) and bring your working tong clip based on this design to the Spring Conference. They will be judged and tested by the contributors to this Newsletter. If we have at least 10 entries, I personally would be willing to donate “cash” for first place. (Hmmmmm, I wonder if Titanium would be a viable material for this?) Remember to put your touchmark or stamp initials on it so we know who made the particular piece.    As Always, Have Fun!   Kermit
