Normal Choke (Muzzle End)
Drawings from Greener's, The Gun.
Recessed, or Jug Choke - A system of boring to increase the degree of choke constriction in a barrel, or to add choke boring to a gun built without it.
Choke - A carefully measured constriction of the bore of a shotgun at the muzzle, designed to control the spread of the shot as it leaves the barrel.
For terminology of the degrees of choke boring, see the Choke Boring Chart
The concept of Choke was invented by an American gunsmith Sylvester Roper in 1866 and almost simultaneously by an English gunmaker, W. R. Pape. But, it was popularized by the far more successful businessman-gunmaker, W. W. Greener.
