Shotgun
Side-by-Side Shotgun
Over & Under Shotgun
Muzzles of a side-by-side shotgun, showing smooth bores.
Shotgun - A shoulder-mounted firearm with one or two (or very occasionally more) smoothbore barrels through which is fired a charge of a small handful of tiny pellets, usually at flying birds or other moving targets.
The barrels of double shotguns may be configured over&under or side-by-side.
Repeating shotguns typically have a single, often interchangeable, barrel. To fit a barrel whose bore is machined with spiral grooves, designed to impart a gyroscopically-stabilizing spin to a single projectile, regardless of bore diameter, whether expressed in gauge or calibre, makes it, by definition, a rifle.
