Sling Swivel

Fixed Sling Swivel. European sling swivels like the above tend to be mounted permanently, with bales wide enough to accept leather slings ¾” wide at the point of attachment. The strap part can be wider.

Quick-Detachable Sling Swivels.    Left: Forged, Winchester Super Grade, to fit 5/16" wide stud.                                  Right: Common Standard "Uncle Mike's" type, to fit 1/4" wide stud.

Inletted and pedestalled base for a standard quick detachable sling swivel.

Winchester "Super Grade" Sling Swivel Base. Favored by Hoffman and Griffin & Howe. The stud is ½” wide. It can accept bales of different widths. But the standard, again, is 1 inch.

Sling Swivel - A slender steel bale about which a carry sling is folded. May be permanently affixed to the rifle or quick-detachable. Normal on American rifles. Frequent on European shotguns. Virtually non-existent on American and English shotguns.

Another system uses studs with larger-diameter eyes.  Photo   The English use this system for their rawhide-thong-end slings. These, when tied through the sling eyes provide almost completely silent operation. Winchester, in the late 19th century used a similar mounting to the rifle, but provided sling swivels fitted with a wire hook---which clipped through the sling eye.
