From John Perry's web site:
Like most boys, I grew up with knives, the first being a Case Stockman with jigged bone handles. I learned to respect knives after I was caught sticking my new Case knife in a tree. Barlows were big in grade school, and knives were always special gifts at birthdays and Christmas time.
I had no knowledge of handmade knives until a co-worker at the machine shop introduced me to Blade Magazine. Lunchtime was spent with my nose stuck in Blade and soon I was inspired to make my first knife in late 1990. It was a full tang hunter with a walnut handle and brass guard that I presented to my Dad at Christmas.
In 1992 I moved my family to Arkansas for work. It proved to be a real blessing, as I found myself surrounded by some of the country's finest knifemakers. With the help of this valuable resource, I have continuously honed my skills.
With the encouragement of Ron Newton and arm-twisting of Jerry Fisk, I joined the American Bladesmith Society in 2001. I took my Intro to Bladesmithing that October. I successfully tested for Jouneyman in 2003, and in 2005 I tested for Mastersmith. My efforts were rewarded with the B.R. Hughes Award for best knife submitted for Mastersmith judging and Best Antique Bowie awarded by the Antique Bowie Knife Association.
I am now working as a full-time bladesmith. I look forward to spending many more years creating fine knives for collectors here at home and around the world.
